This week I started my first week at school! It turns out though that my professor was on a trip so I don't officially start in lab until next monday. But that is a-okay with me because that meant more exploration time/studying GRE vocab (sad). But anyways there's lots of other research students here in the same program from England, France, Spain, Taiwan and even more countries in my dorm.
Tuesday- Orientation/Visit Lab
Wednesday- Survival Japanese/ Spidey
Thursday- Shibuya Explorin
Friday- Survival Japanese
Survival Japanese Lessons
We (the other international students and I) had our first survival japanese lesson on Wednesday. My brain was fried by the end of class but at least I can introduce myself somewhat now. I really should learn so I can stop just blank nodding and smiling whenever the convenience store clerks ask a question.
Spiderman
Lol I went all the way to japan just to watch the new spiderman movie. Also apparently in japan Wednesday is like ladies night at the theater so I got $3 off (was still lowkey expensive tickets at $12). But it was fun, had some laffs with everyone.
Some Customs/Things I've Learned about Japan
-People line up on the left side of the escalator and then the right side is for people who walk up/down as the escalator is moving. I forget a lot and then end up having to walk up or just scoot to the left.
-"Arigato gozaimasu" after literally any interaction buying something.
-EVERYONE EATS OUT. Everyone. Also it's common here to eat by yourself at a restaurant/shop but I feel like I almost never do that in the US I would just take out.
Shibuya Explorin OWL CAFE
I ate at Mos Burger and I have to say it really is the in-n-out of japan. I think I had the teriyaki burger honestly I don't really know I just pointed to something on the menu. I also got a crepe in Harajuku but it tasted BAD. I WAS SO SAD. The crepe was all soggy and there was just way too much whipped cream it was a mess.
Ok I don't know why I thought this was a good idea considering I'm mildly afraid of birds. But I went to an owl cafe and you could PET the owls?? That was so terrifying but exciting. Here is a vid of an owl intimidating me.
My dormmates also recommended me this ramen place close to the dorm. It was YumZ. Sorry I only have this snapchat photo of the evidence.
